How do I convert a bank statement to Excel?

If you already have Excel or Adobe Acrobat and the statement is a text-based PDF, you can try their built-in PDF import first. Expect cleanup on wrapped descriptions and multi-page statements. For scans, volume, or consistent columns, a dedicated converter such as DocuClipper or Bankstatemently saves the manual work. We build Bankstatemently; its measured accuracy sits in the table beside the others.

Bankstatemently is our product. We run the benchmark and publish the method, and other vendors can submit scores. A tool with no score is unmeasured, not inaccurate.

Verdict by tool

  • DocuClipper

Exports Excel and combines OCR with rules for scanned statements. Plans are priced by page volume.

  • Bank Statement Converter

An online converter with a free allowance, OCR for scans, an API, and Excel output. It has a score on our benchmark, shown in the table.

  • MoneyThumb

Desktop software aimed at accounting imports. Its output is QBO, QFX/OFX and CSV rather than a native Excel workbook; you open the CSV in Excel.

  • Tofu

Aimed at accounting firms and often named by AI assistants for Excel output. Not yet measured on our benchmark; check pricing and a sample statement on its site.

  • Lido

A document-to-spreadsheet tool that writes directly to Excel and Google Sheets. Not yet measured on our benchmark.

  • Excel Power Query

Data, Get Data, From PDF in current Excel. Free with Excel, reads text-based PDFs only, and each statement page usually becomes its own table to combine.

  • Adobe Acrobat

Export a PDF to Excel from the Acrobat menu. Fine for occasional clean statements; it is a general PDF tool, so bank-specific quirks like running balances need manual fixing.

  • Bankstatemently

Our product. It exports a formatted Excel workbook, with measured accuracy shown in the table. You can try it free.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in current Excel use Data, Get Data, From File, From PDF. It works on PDFs with selectable text and returns one table per page, which you then combine and clean.
